RALPHH HELPS WINDSOR TAKE POSITIVE STEP IN CARDIAC TESTING

RALPHH has expanded its support for cardiac testing among young rowers by sponsoring 10 places at a cardiac screening programme organised by Windsor Boys School Boat Club.

Taking place at the School, the event drew upon the support of CRY (Cardiac Risk for the Young) and took place on a Tuesday in mid-January. Whilst most of the 100 young people involved in testing were drawn from Windsor Boys, the RALPHH sponsorship allowed the testing reach to be extended to other schools in the vicinity.

CRY reports that every week in the UK 12 apparently fit and healthy individuals aged under 35 die from undiagnosed cardiac conditions. It is for this reason that the national charity RALPHH is keen to support the testing of young people in the early stages of their being introduced to strenuous sport, or in moving to a higher level of intensity in coaching. This is best reflected by the fact that in March of this year RALPHH will sponsor a complete testing programme for those shortlisted for consideration in joining the British Rowing squad.

“We are most grateful to Megan Quinlan and Ryan Rees-Jones at Windsor for making this initiative possible,” said Timothy Liversage, Trustee of the RALPHH charity. “The day was a great success and demonstrated a proper commitment to safeguarding.”

In the wider environment the NHS is under growing pressure to help treat those suffering from cardiac or circulatory conditions. Between February 2020 and March 2024, the waiting list in England rose by 414,596 individuals, a rise of 78 per cent. Notably over 41 per cent of this number had been waiting more than 18 weeks for care.
